Military Service

U.S. Navy Veteran, Nuclear Submarine Service
Rick served in and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy Nuclear Submarine Service.  He served aboard the U.S.S. Casimir Pulaski and the U.S.S. Holland from 1984 through 1990.  He specialized in reactor plant operations, radiation safety, and nuclear plant repair.

 
 
Community Service

President, Richland School Board

Rick was elected to the Richland School Board in 2001 where he continues to serve. As a Board Member and President of the Board, Rick worked with leaders from throughout the state to improve student learning, helped lead the district as it modernized and built new schools, and serves as the Chair of the State School Directorsí Legislative Committee in Olympia. Because of this and other work, the Richland School Board was recently honored as the Washington State School Board of the Year.

Past President, Leadership Tri-Cities Board of Directors
Rick is a graduate, Board Member, and former Secretary and Immediate Past President of Leadership Tri-Cities. The mission of Leadership Tri-Cities is to identify and develop leaders for our community. The program curriculum introduces members to various topics of importance in our community, including Education, Agriculture, Law and Justice, Social Services, Local and State Government, and Hanford.

Washington State Agriculture and Forestry Leadership Foundation

Rick was selected from a state-wide pool of candidates as a participant in the prestigious 2-year Leadership Program provided by the Washington State Agriculture and Forestry Leadership Program. He was elected President of his class and represented the class during their time in Washington DC and in Eastern Europe in 2007 and 2008.  The Washington State Agriculture and Forestry Foundation is a two-year program designed to develop leaders in Washington’s natural resources industries.  Read more here:

Past Vice President, Richland Public Facilities District Board of Directors

Rick was appointed to the Board in 2011 and served as the Board Vice-President.  During his tenure on the Board, Rick has caused the board to right-size the Hanford Reach Interpretive Center, and brought operating costs down by more than half. 


Past Secretary, Richland Rotary

Rick served as the Secretary of the Richland Rotary club, and works to live by the Rotary motto of “Service above Self.”

 
 
Professional Experience

Executive Director, Tri-County Partners Habitat for Humanity
Rick served for nearly three years as the Executive Director of our regionís Habitat for Humanity affiliate. Local Business Owner
Rick has owned and operated several local businesses. He partnered with his father in a new home construction company from 1998 through 2007. From 2007 until beginning work with Habitat for Humanity in 2014, Rick operated as a sole proprietor providing nuclear safety and emergency management consulting services to a variety of clients. These business experiences left him with a deep understanding of the challenges and needs faced by the business community. A strong and healthy business climate is necessary for our region to continue to grow and prosper.

Supervisory and Management Experience at the Hanford Site

Rick served in various leadership roles at the Hanford Site, including Shift Supervisor, Dayshift Manager, and the Manager of the Plutonium Finishing Plant Radiological Control Organization. He also served as a Senior Radiological Control Technician, a Technical Instructor, and a Lead Auditor.


Nevada Nuclear Test Site Experience

Rick supervised the dayshift operations of the radiochemical counting laboratory for the Nevada Nuclear Test Site during weapon testing activities.

  About Rick
  I am proud of my family. I am married to Kristi who is a science and Spanish teacher in Kennewick. We have five children.  The oldest three are married and live in the Tri-Cities, and the youngest two are in Richland Schools.

My family and I are active in our community church, where I serve on the leadership council.  I believe in service, and have served on mission trips locally and around the world, including India, Thailand, and Latin America.
